There is / There are

Neste texto, vamos estudar a estrutura do there + to be (there is/are) que tem o sentido de haver, existir ou ter (no sentido de existir). Já o verbo have (ter) é usado para indicar posse.

Exemplos:

I have one car. (Eu tenho um carro) -> Indica posse

There are two chairs in my living room. (Existem duas cadeiras na minha sala de estar). -> Indica existência

Para utilizarmos essa estrutura, é importante relembrar duas conjugações do verb to be: is e are. A estrutura do there to be é dividida em singular e plural. There is é utilizado no singular e There are no plural.

Ex: There is a laundry room in my house. (Tem uma área de serviço na minha casa) -> Singular

There are three people in my house. (Têm três pessoas na minha casa) -> Plural

Veja abaixo a estrutura do there + to be na forma afirmativa ( + ), negativa ( – ) e interrogativa ( ? ):

( + ) There is a book on the table.	( + ) There are two cars in the garage.
( – ) There is not a book on the table. There isn’t a book on the table.	( – ) There are not two cars in the garage. There aren’t two cars in the garage.
( ? ) Is there a book on the table? Yes, there is.	( ? ) Are there two cars in the garage? No, there aren’t.

Na forma interrogativa, é necessário inverter o to be com o there. Veja mais exemplos:

A: Is there a dining room in your house?

B: No, there isn’t.

A: Are there bedrooms in your house?

B: Yes, there are.

Contrações + there to be

Na forma afirmativa e negativa podemos contrair para que a fala fique mais dinâmica. Veja o quadro abaixo:

( – ) There are not people in this room. (Não há pessoas nessa sala)	( – ) There aren’t people in this room. (Não há pessoas nessa sala)
